Chiropractic Care Throughout Pregnancy Can Mean Safer, Easier Births

For both mom and baby, receiving prenatal chiropractic care can make all the difference throughout pregnancy and birth. For the mother, receiving prenatal chiropractic care can:

  • Reduce interference to the vital nerve system which controls and coordinates all systems and functions
  • Remove tension in ligaments that support the uterus
  • Provide adequate blood flow to the uterus is also crucial in ensuring the fetal heart rate remains in a safe, healthy range
  • Decrease the potential for unnecessary intervention and create an ideal environment, meaning risk of needing a C-section, medical turning when baby is breach, or the use of forceps or vacuum tools are all lessened
  • Prepare pelvis for an easier pregnancy and birth by creating a state of balance in pelvic bony structures, muscles, and ligaments
  • Increase blood flow to the uterus which increases the amount of muscle contraction during delivery (helps with pushing)
I began seeing Dr. Natasha at the beginning of the 3rd trimester of my pregnancy after being referred by a friend.  This was my first pregnancy and I began having pain down the right side of my back and rib cage that made it difficult and painful to sit for long periods of time.  I have been to other chiropractors before, but was particularly worried about going to a chiropractor being that I was pregnant.  I ended up seeing Dr. Natasha 1-2 times per week through the remainder of my pregnancy.  She worked to provide me relief from the back pain I was initially experiencing.   As my pregnancy progressed she worked on the pain in my hips that developed and to ensure my hips were properly aligned to allow my baby, who was found to be breach in an ultrasound, to move into proper position.  Each visit I would let her know what pains or issues I had been having since my previous visit and she always had an answer for me as to what was causing it and not only what she would do that visit to help alleviate the issue, but exercises I could do myself that would help.  At 39 weeks 6 days I had an uncomplicated delivery of a 8 lb baby boy.  Should I become pregnant again, I will definitely incorporate chiropractic visits to Dr. Natasha as part of my regular prenatal care.

What Prenatal Adjustments Mean for Your Baby

Prenatal adjustments have a number of advantages to the mother during pregnancy, but they offer tremendous benefits to the baby during pregnancy and birth as well. As mentioned above, prenatal chiropractic care can ensure the fetal heart rate remains in a safe range. Some additional advantages these adjustments provide to your baby include:

  • Reduced interference to the mother’s nerve system allowing for better baby development
  • Pelvic balance that allows the baby greater room to develop without restrictions to its forming head, spine, and other skeletal structures
  • Lessened risk of breach offered the baby’s ability the room to move into the best possible position for birth
  • Proper fetal positioning offers significantly decreased risk in abnormal labor or birth and the resulting birth trauma that can be caused by intervention

The Webster technique, a chiropractic analysis and gentle adjustment of the tailbone, pelvic bones, muscles, and ligaments, should be performed regularly throughout a woman’s entire pregnancy. As with all adjustments of the tailbone, pelvic balance is improved, which reduces tension in the attached muscles and ligaments. In pregnant women, without proper pelvic balance, the uneven pulling on these muscles and ligaments may be restrict the baby’s ability to get into the best possible position for birth.

Receiving prenatal chiropractic care can be one of the best things you do for yourself and your baby throughout your pregnancy
